In 2004 the SUV was the most exciting automotive market and this X5 was at the top of the list. I remember my first ride in a 4.8is and was blown away with its power and the noise it made. 10 years ago everybody was talking about SUV’s and today, they still are. The only X5 I find worth talking about over the past decade is the 4.8is. That small letter “s” is what really sets this one apart from the others. In BMW language that means it has a 355 horsepower 4.8 liter engine that was based on an Alpina design. The exterior and interior received interior and exterior decorations. It may have an electronically controlled limited-slip center differential but lets be honest this is X5 will not be going off road. This is for somebody who demands a higher ride height than an M5 with M5 road performance. And here is a nice example offered for sale in Portland, Oregon.

This X5 caught our attention because of its condition. The mileage is correct for the year and the maintenance preformed shows that this car wasn’t driven on a budget. The wheels appear to be free of any curb rash and the bumpers show that this hasn’t been parked on the streets of downtown Portland. Seeing factory floor mats is a welcomed sign of preservation. The houndstooth may not be for everybody but it’s a subtle design that feels very euro. Ask the seller if the digital text has any faded pixels. Also, ask about tire tread depth on all four wheels. These first generation X5’s can age very well if they are well cared for like this one. And at half the price of the following problematic generation I say this is a car well bought.
